Fujitsu and Wi-LAN Deliver Industry Leadership in WiMAX-Compliant Broadband Wireless Technology

Libra MX Platform Using the Fujitsu WiMAX SoC to be Featured at Fujitsu Booth #204 at Broadband Wireless World April 21-22

Broadband Wireless World, Las Vegas, NV, April 21, 2005 - Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA) and Wi-LAN Inc. (TSX:WIN) will demonstrate Wi-LAN’s Libra MX™ network system, using the Fujitsu WiMAX System-on-Chip (SoC), MB87M3400, in the Fujitsu booth #204 at the seventh annual Broadband Wireless World in Las Vegas, April 21-22. Fujitsu will also introduce its WiMAX SoC at a press conference at the show on April 21. The event will take place in the Genoa Room in Caesar’s Palace, from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m.

Wi-LAN’s Libra MX system is the industry’s first WiMAX platform that meets the performance and throughput requirements of demanding point-to-point and point-to-multipoint broadband applications. Wi-LAN’s next-generation broadband wireless access systems are being built around the new, highly integrated WiMAX-compliant system-on-chip developed by Fujitsu Microelectronics America and Wi-LAN.

Fujitsu and Wi-LAN have been working closely on WiMAX technology since late 2002. Wi-LAN has combined its system expertise and Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) technology with FMA’s chip design capabilities in a development program that created the new SoC from Fujitsu. The highly integrated, high-performance solution incorporates embedded processors and mixed signal technology in a device that will enable systems developers like Wi-LAN to provide cost-effective WiMAX Forum Certified™ equipment.

FMA and Wi-LAN are founding and board members of the WiMAX Forum™ and active participants in the IEEE and ETSI standards bodies. Together, FMA and Wi-LAN have been leaders in generating industry-wide acceptance of the IEEE 802.16 and ETSI HiperMAN wireless MAN standards, which are the basis of successful WiMAX deployments.

Wi-LAN’s Libra MX networks are guaranteed to be interoperable with future WiMAX-compliant solutions, which protects customer investments in Libra MX and will minimize future network and revenue disruption. Wi-LAN’s Continuity Program™ guarantees that any Libra MX subscriber unit will operate side by side, in the same network, the same cell and even the same sector with future WiMAX Forum Certified subscriber units, offering Wi-LAN customers a solid migration path to WiMAX Forum Certified systems, which are expected to be available in late 2005.

"Wi-LAN has established itself as an industry leader in advanced broadband wireless networking technology," said Keith Horn, senior vice president of marketing and sales for Fujitsu Microelectronics America. "Our work with them has resulted in a high-performance, highly integrated, and cost-efficient WiMAX system-on-chip."

"The development program with Fujitsu Microelectronics has created a very advanced broadband wireless-access device that will bring WiMAX broadband capabilities to a broad range of business and individual users," said John Seliga, vice president of marketing for Wi-LAN. "Our collaboration has enabled a major step forward for the broadband wireless access industry."
