Wi-LAN AND WELLINK AGREE TO PURSUE MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR OPPORTUNITY IN BROADBAND MOBILE WIRELESS INTELLIGENT TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS
South Korea’s Wellink to Place Orders Subject to Certain Terms and Conditions
CALGARY, Canada and SEOUL, South Korea - March 9, 2004 -Wi-LAN Inc. (TSX:WIN), a global provider of broadband wireless communications products and technologies, and Wellink, a leading integrator of high-speed telecommunication systems, announced today an agreement to enter the market for broadband mobile wireless Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) using Wi-LAN’s LIBRA 5800 TM (Transit Mobility) product and Wellink’s network backbone products. Wi-LAN also agreed to provide Wellink with broadband mobile wireless products valued at several million dollars over a 12-month period. The agreement is subject to certain terms and conditions, including feature enhancements of Wi-LAN’s LIBRA 5800 TM products, based on Wi-LAN’s patented W-OFDM (Wide-band Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) technology. These mobile wireless systems are intended for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) in the Asia-Pacific region. Intended ITS applications for the Wi-LAN / Wellink systems are broadband communications to high-speed trains, including real-time video security, video advertising and broadband wireless Internet.
"We are confident that with the successful addition of the new features, Wellink and Wi-LAN will have a unique product offering that meets the real-time security needs of the ITS market and has excess capacity to offer additional services, such as Wi-Fi hotspots on trains" said Dr. Hyun Chul Nam, Chief Executive Officer of Wellink. "We have been very pleased with Wi-LAN’s progress since we agreed to co-develop ITS systems with them several months ago. We have since demonstrated the superiority of Wi-LAN’s LIBRA W-OFDM based products for broadband mobile transit applications. Our new agreement with Wi-LAN demonstrates our confidence in their products for the ITS market."
In April 2003, Wi-LAN and Wellink announced an agreement to jointly develop a solution for the ITS market. Wi-LAN’s technology teams have since developed the LIBRA 5800 TM series in conjunction with Wellink’s development of the network backbone and other components that together make up a complete broadband wireless transit mobility system. The results so far demonstrate the capabilities of Wi-LAN’s W-OFDM based systems under mobile conditions, thus providing practical confirmation that the OFDM technology being supported by the WiMAX Forum* is a contender for future fourth generation (4G) cellular systems.
"The ITS market represents a potentially huge $100 million per year opportunity where the combination of Wi-LAN’s W-OFDM leadership and Wellink’s network know-how can provide unequalled capabilities and solutions for railways, subways and other rail services," said Dr. Sayed-Amr El-Hamamsy, President and Chief Executive Officer of Wi-LAN. "Wellink, with a 12-year track record of telecommunications technology innovation and development, a solid reputation and broad customer base in the Asia-Pacific region, and the capital required to fund incremental research and development of the products to meet ITS applications requirements, has proven to be an excellent partner. We are very pleased to sign this agreement and look forward to continued technological success and growing sales as a result of our partnership."
