CALGARY, Canada and DHAKA, Bangladesh - July 28, 2004 - Wi-LAN Inc. (TSX:WIN), a global provider of broadband wireless communications products and technologies, and Norban Communications Limited (Norban), a provider of network solutions and services including data, voice and video convergence, today announced Wi-LAN's broadband wireless access products and accessories have been delivered as part of the Sustainable Development Networking Program (SDNP), an initiative under the Ministry of Environment and Forest of Bangladesh funded by the United Nations Development Program.

"The objective of the Sustainable Development Networking Program is to facilitate the establishment of Internet exchanges at selected Ministry of Environment and Forest offices. These Internet exchanges connect the various Dhaka-based internet service providers to optimize the flow of email traffic within the country," said Dr. Hakikur Rahman, Project Coordinator, SDNP. "We look forward to a successful implementation and the expansion of this network to other cities in the near future."

"We considered all of the radios in the market," said Mr. Riton Kumar Roy, Assistant System Administrator, SDNP. "Our conclusion was that Wi-LAN's Ultima3 radios provided the most reliable and robust services under all weather conditions."

Wi-LAN's Ultima3 product series is designed to meet the needs of license-exempt wireless Internet service providers, telecommunications companies, and enterprises looking to build or extend broadband communications infrastructures. Using a cellular-based frequency reuse point-to-multipoint network design linked by point-to-point units, Wi-LAN's scalable Ultima3 solution can easily serve a large customer base. Coverage cells can be added and expanded quickly and cost effectively. By starting small and expanding, network operators experience early profits, and enterprises realize incremental cost savings. Ultima3 is based on Wi-LAN's patented MC-DSSS technology.

"Wi-LAN is the clear market leader for internet service provider backhaul in Bangladesh, having deployed the most units in active field service," said Mr. Asif Iqbal Khan, Director of Norban, "Wi-LAN's technology leadership and quality combined with the reliable systems integration capabilities provided by Norban enabled us to secure this important contract."

"Currently, around 30 ISP's and Data Service Providers are using Wi-LAN equipment for long haul, internet service provider and data service needs," said Terry Wason, Regional Sales Director, India and Southeast Asia, Wi-LAN Inc. "Our success in this market is made possible through the support of strong partners from the key wireless system integrators within Bangladesh, like Norban. We have sold more than a half a million dollars worth of equipment in Bangladesh in the last year, and are poised to grow that amount this year."

"Wi-LAN is pleased to play a major role in the emerging growth of wireless in Bangladesh," said Nico Roelofsen, Vice President, Global Sales, Wi-LAN Inc. "This country has embraced the value that wireless Internet can provide. The high reliability of our products has enabled us to provide all the backhaul and critical links for this network. Wi-LAN's AWE 45-24s and 120-58s, Ultima3, Libra 3000 and Libra 5800 are being used for mission critical, secure and reliable broadband wireless networks in Bangladesh. This is because we offer the best technology and the best warranty in the industry and we are committed to the success of our customers. "

Available in license-exempt and licensed frequency bands, Wi-LAN's broadband wireless access products are certified for deployment in most countries worldwide. Wi-LAN products are designed for commercial outdoor broadband wireless networks and are ideal for high-density non-line-of-sight (NLOS) point-to-multipoint configurations, medium-density ad-hoc networks, and long-distance point-to-point backhaul applications.

Wi-LAN's products are developed to exceed the needs of broadband wireless customers. Wi-LAN provides customers with a smooth upgrade path as new products become available. With WiMAX just around the corner, Wi-LAN has introduced its CONTINUITY PROGRAMTM. The core of the CONTINUITY PROGRAM is Wi-LAN's commitment that any Libra Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) will operate side by side, in the same network, the same cell and even the same sector with future WiMAX Certified CPE's. The CONTINUITY PROGRAM will minimize network and revenue disruption and protect customers' investment in current technology when networks are transitioned to WiMAX compliant equipment. The CONTINUITY PROGRAM offers Wi-LAN customers a solid migration path to Wi-LAN's Wi-MAX Certified systems, which are expected to be available in the first half of 2005.
