Wi-LAN LIBRA Series Products Provide WiMAX W-OFDM Performance and Assurance of a Seamless Transition to WiMAX Compliant Products

CALGARY, Canada and SAN JOSE, California - January 22, 2004 - Wi-LAN Inc. (TSX:WIN), a global provider of broadband wireless communications products and technologies, today launched its CONTINUITY PROGRAM at the Wireless Communication Association’s 10th Annual Technical Symposium and Business Expo in San Jose, California. The core of the CONTINUITY PROGRAM is Wi-LAN’s commitment that any current LIBRA Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) will operate side by side, in the same network, the same cell and even the same sector with future WiMAX compliant CPE’s. The CONTINUITY PROGRAM will minimize network and revenue disruption and protect customers’ investment in current technology when networks are transitioned to WiMAX compliant equipment.

"Our customers are very excited about the new WiMAX standard", said Nico Roelofsen, Vice President, Global Sales, Wi-LAN Inc. "Our unique CONTINUITY PROGRAM enables them to gain both the technical and market experience that they need now; without having to wait until WiMAX compliant products become available. Wi-LAN customers can start rolling out profitable LIBRA networks today and be in position to take advantage of future WiMAX equipment to grow the networks in the future."

The LIBRA Series, the only broadband wireless product series in commercial use today that utilizes the same W-OFDM technology required for WiMAX compliance, delivers the exceptional throughput, high spectral efficiency and non-line-of-sight performance that will become the standard for WiMAX compliant products. Thousands of LIBRA Series products have been deployed in various commercial broadband wireless networks in over 30 countries worldwide.

"The huge advantage of WiMAX comes from its incorporation of Wi-LAN’s patented W-OFDM technology which gives it non-line-of-sight performance, improved network capacity and very high spectral efficiency," said Dr. Sayed-Amr El-Hamamsy, President and CEO, Wi-LAN Inc. "Wi-LAN patented W-OFDM in 1992 and has been selling W-OFDM based products since 1999. Wi-LAN is committed to leveraging its proven wireless leadership to ensure that we are first to deliver WiMAX compliant commercial products in early 2005."

Wi-LAN’s current LIBRA Series products have a physical layer that is substantially the same as the WiMAX physical layer, and a proprietary Medium Access Control layer (MAC). LIBRA delivers 32 megabits-per- second (Mbps) throughput in a 10 Megahertz (MHz) channel providing WiMAX-like performance with availability of 192 Mbps in a six-sector cell, and Wi-LAN plans to incorporate a WiMAX MAC in 2005 to enable interoperability with other WiMAX compliant equipment. Wi-LAN is working with Fujitsu Microelectronics America to co-develop a WiMAX compliant system-on-chip (SoC). Wi-LAN expects the WiMAX compliant SoC will be available in the fall of 2004, and Wi-LAN LIBRA Series products are expected to be ready for WiMAX compliance testing in the first quarter of 2005. Wi-LAN expects WiMAX will be prepared to initiate compliance testing near the end of 2004.

Wi-LAN is exhibiting its LIBRA Series products at booth 109 at the Wireless Communication Association’s 10th Annual Technical Symposium and Business Expo, January 21 to 23, Fairmont Hotel, San Jose, California.
