Wireless Communications Association International Honours Wi-LAN for South American Banking Network

02/10/2003

CALGARY, Canada - January 10, 2003 - Wi-LAN Inc. (TSE:WIN), a global provider of broadband wireless communications products and technologies, is pleased to announce that it will be awarded a Wireless Communications Association (WCA) International "Wemmie" Award on January 14th at WCA's Ninth Annual Technical Symposium and Business Expo at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, California. The award is for the Banco Del Pichincha non-line-of-sight network in Ecuador. This is Wi-LAN's second Wemmie Award and Wi-LAN representatives will be present to accept the award and discuss Wi-LAN's products and technologies.

"We are honoured and thrilled to receive this award," said Hatim Zaghloul, Wi-LAN Chairman and CEO. "This network, with its very high reliability, is an excellent example of how Wi-LAN's non-line-of-sight technology can overcome challenging environments. We are proud of this industry recognition of Wi-LAN's leadership in the field of non-line-of-sight networking technology."

The award is in the Underserved Business (International) category. It recognizes those who provide the most advanced new system deployment or system upgrade that extends high-speed data services to areas within which, previously, only slower or more expensive services were available to businesses. The WCA jury of leading operators and diversified engineering consulting companies decided on award winners in nine different categories.

"Ecuador's Banco Del Pichincha has trusted the design of its data communication networks to Trasmidatos Ltda. for more than 15 years", said Trasmidatos General Manager, Jorge Glas. "We chose Wi-LAN's VIP 110-24 product because it offers the reliability, cost effectiveness and bandwidth efficiency that our client needs to support its use for several different services."

Practically all of the Banco Del Pichincha's last mile access consists of high-speed wireless IP links using Wi-LAN's VIP 110-24 product, which uses spread spectrum technology that enables high-speed anypoint-to-multipoint configurations. The same low cost equipment has supplied a reliable, economic and high-speed solution to each of the bank branch offices with services such as VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), IP ATMs (Internet Protocol Automated Teller Machines), bank terminals, electronic mail, secure line access, and Internet access. The VINE network topology avoids the use of repeater stations that would have been needed with other types of wireless equipment, greatly reducing the cost and improving the reliability of the network.

About WCA's Technical Symposium & Business Expo:
WCA's Ninth Annual Technical Symposium & Business Expo is the world's largest annual gathering of senior executives in broadband wireless technical development, deployment and financing. From Jan. 13 to 15 at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, CA, it focuses on Next Generation technologies -- with at least eight announcements of Next Generation deployment or trial results from leading carriers in the U.S. and internationally. The VINE Advantage
The VINE (Versatile Intelligent Network Environment) architecture is a hybrid between point-to-multipoint and mesh network topologies that keeps the advantages of both. It facilitates a scalable anypoint-to-multipoint fixed wireless network that can be deployed a node at a time by allowing each wireless unit in the network to act as an access point, repeater, or end node, making it easier for customers to both install and manage their wireless networks. For a new node to become part of an existing network, all that is needed is for it to be within radio frequency reach of any other node already in the network. Once part of the network, the new node can become the access point for other new nodes. This architectural flexibility allows network planners to implement coverage quickly and cost-effectively, adding capacity when necessary. VINE technology is proprietary to Wi-LAN and is patent pending.
