Wi-LAN Wins Major Contracts in Middle East and Central Asia Region

08/07/2003

CALGARY, CANADA

New Orders received total CDN $2 million of which over $1.4
Million was shipped in July

Wi-LAN Inc. (TSE:WIN), a global provider of Broadband wireless communication products and systems and technologies announced today that it has received several Purchase orders totaling CND $2Million from its Gold Partners/Distributor in UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Pakistan and Turkey for its VIP 110-24 and
Ultima 3 products and for its new W-OFDM based Libra 5800 system.

"Shipping over 1000 units in July is an exciting expansion of Wi-LAN's growing installed base in the Middle East and Central Asia. There is a need for reliable broadband products in the region, which we deliver. It's great to see a steady increase in Wi-LAN's market share in this developing wireless market," said
Nico Roelofsen Wi-LAN's VP Global Sales.

The Wi-LAN VIP 110-24 is an 11 Mbps wireless Ethernet product operating in the 2.4GHz unlicensed frequency band, which uses Wi-LAN's VINE(TM) (Versatile Intelligent Networking Environment) technology to deliver the industry's first "Anypoint to Multipoint" mesh-network architecture and is also used for Point-To-Point (PTP) applications.

Wi-LAN's Ultima3 series of products are 12Mbps Ethernet products built with Wi-LAN's Patented MC-DSSS technology. Ultima3 is designed to meet the Point-To-Point (PTP) & Multipoint (MP) needs of ISP's (Internet Service Providers) and Enterprises seeking to build or extend Broadband Communication Infrastructures. Ultima3 series includes Point-To-Point products, RD's (Rapid Deployment) and ER's (Extended Range), Multipoint products AP's (Access Point), CPE (Customer Premise Equipment) & LCPE's (Long Range CPE), which can easily serve small and large customers allowing for quick expansion of Cell Coverage by starting small and expanding, allowing ISP's and Network Operators to experience early profits and Enterprises to realize incremental cost savings.

Since the first commercial shipments of the VIP 110-24 in August 2001, and the first Commercial shipments of the Ultima3 in August 2002, Wi-LAN has delivered the VIP 110-24 and the Ultima3 products in large volume to customers around the world, including Canada, the United States, Europe, India, Africa, the Middle East
& Central Asia, Latin America, China and Asia.

Wi-LAN's Libra 5800 is the third generation of Wi-LAN's W-OFDM product and operates in the 5.8GHz band. It provides 32 Mbps Non-Line-of-Site data capability in Point-To-Point and Point-To Multipoint configurations. LIBRA is the only product series today that uses the same W-OFDM technology (256 FFT) that has been
approved as the mainstream physical layer in the IEEE WirelessMAN Standard 802.16a and in the current draft of ETSI HiperMAN. This is the most efficient technology for outdoor use.

"The VIP 110-24 and Ultima3 products with their VINE & MC-DSSS Technology have proven highly reliable and provided us with significant competitive advantage in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Oman wireless markets," said Mr. Mohammed Farahani, General Manager of Infomax, Dr. Aref Nayed, President of Agathon
Systems and Mr. Iyad Al-Ansari, CEO of Elite, being Wi-LAN's Gold Partners in the UAE; and Mr. Ajay Kapoor, General Manager of OHI Telecom of Oman.

"The VIP and Ultima3 products are ideal for our regions' harsh weather conditions and we have already deployed large volumes of VIP and Ultima3 products in both Saudi Arabia and Qatar in remote desert locations and over the Gulfwaters. IMT, our IT systems integration company expects to comtinue large volume Wi-LAN
products deployments," according to Mr Khalid Al Suwaidi, President of Al Suwaidi Holding Company.

"The VIP 110-24 and Ultima3 products have been well received by the Banking, Government and ISP sectors of the Pakistan Market and the current Purchase Orders will further expand our Wi-LAN installed base in Pakistan. We are very excited about Wi-LAN's Libra 5800 32Mbps W-OFDM system and Comstar have lucrative
opportunities for this 256 FFT 802.16a like product in the next six month period," said Mr. Sami Bajwa, President and CEO of Comstar, Wi-LAN's Gold Partner in Pakistan.

"The VIP 110-24 product with its VINE Technology has been well received by both the ISP and Enterprise market sectors in Turkey and further deployments of the VIP 110-24 will continue in the Turkish market," said Mr. Riza Pehlivan, President of UniNet, Wi-LAN's Gold Partner in Turkey.

Hassan Abdelghany, Wi-LAN Sales Director for the Middle East and Central Asia, is delighted about the success Wi-LAN's Channel Partners have in winning such significant bids in this region. "I congratulate everybody and thank-you for your efforts to make Wi-LAN the household name when it comes to reliable broadband
wireless access."

The VINE Advantage

Wi-LAN's patent-pending anypoint-to-multipoint VINE (Versatile Intelligent Network Environment) technology permits the implementation of long distance, medium subscriber density broadband Internet access networks a node-at-a-time. VINE networks deal with Non-Line of Sight (NLOS) limitations in a cost-effective manner by using established network nodes as repeaters for other nodes that either do not have Line-of-Sight or are too distant to have direct connectivity to the Internet
node. VINE networks thus can have significantly lower implementation costs than conventional cell based networks particularly when covering large sparsely populated areas.

The MC-DSSS Advantage

Wi-LAN's patented Multi-Code Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum technology (MC-DSSS) makes it possible to multiply the carrying capacity of traditional spread spectrum systems by as much as ten times

The W-OFDM Advantage

W-OFDM is a variation of OFDM that further improves its characteristics. The signal reception is corrected for distortions, allowing greater transmission speeds, and the signal is processed to maximize the range and multipath resistance. W-OFDM allows lower-power, multipoint radio frequency (RF) networks to be implemented, minimizing interference with adjacent networks. W-OFDM effectively permits several independent channels to operate within the same frequency band, allowing multipoint networks and point-to-point backbone systems to be overlaid on one another. Less disruption of adjacent users and insensitivity to external noise means that high-speed multipoint data networks can be simply and rapidly deployed. These systems are tolerant of changes in the RF environment, limiting maintenance requirements, and the systems can be easily and economically expanded to meet the service provider's growing business.
