EXE Brings Extensive Broadband Wireless Network Deployment Experience in Japan

CALGARY, Canada and TOKYO, Japan - December 16, 2003 - Wi-LAN Inc. (TSX:WIN), a global provider of broadband wireless communications products and technologies, and EXE Technology, Inc., a Japanese wireless technology company specializing in the development, design and security policy implementation of broadband networks, have joined forces to market Wi-LAN’s broadband fixed wireless access products in Japan. EXE will offer Wi-LAN’s products as cost-effective broadband wireless metropolitan area network solutions for telecommunications companies, Internet service providers (ISPs), local governments, enterprise users and system integrators.

"In Japan, government policy for radio frequency usage for broadband wireless networks is rapidly opening up. Wi-LAN’s broadband wireless access products provide the robust, industrial strength broadband wireless network solutions that the Japanese market requires," said Shigeru Yamashita, Chief Executive Officer, EXE Technology, Inc. "Wi-LAN’s solutions will allow our customers to easily expand their existing IEEE 802.11 standard-based broadband wireless networks and offer services such as mobility, high-speed Internet access and data transmission."

Available in license-exempt and licensed frequency bands, Wi-LAN’s broadband fixed wireless access products are certified for deployment in most countries worldwide. Wi-LAN products are designed for commercial outdoor broadband wireless networks and are capable of high-density non-line-of-sight (NLOS) point-to-multipoint configurations, medium-density ad-hoc networks, and long-distance point-to-point backhaul applications.

"Japan’s broadband cost is becoming the lowest in the world because of widespread ADSL usage. However, ADSL solutions are often not practical or cost-effective for geographically dispersed industrial and residential suburbs. In such cases, our VIP 110-24 VINE architecture is an ideal solution," said Nico Roelofsen, Vice President, Global Sales, Wi-LAN Inc. "We hope that further liberalization of the Japanese government’s frequency usage policies will soon allow the use of our W-OFDM based LIBRA product lines in Japan. We expect the combination of our superior broadband wireless solutions and EXE’s broad experience and success in deploying broadband wireless networks will allow us to gain rapid penetration of the Japanese market, adding Japan to the list of over 70 countries where our products are now deployed."
"EXE has professional broadband experience in deploying Wi-Fi hotspots, enterprise networks, and wireless access security solutions in Japan, and Wi-LAN’s products, with our long-range, high capacity and non-line-of-sight capabilities are an ideal complement to EXE’s existing 802.11 standard-based product lines" said Kia Chong, Regional Director, Asia Pacific, Wi-LAN Inc. "I expect this new relationship will be very beneficial for both companies and will build on our many successes in the Asia-Pacific region with companies such as Guangdong UniCom, China Communications, China Satellite Communications, and Wellink of South Korea."

Wi-LAN designs and markets broadband wireless access products with features that match customer needs, regulatory requirements and various network topographies:

  • The LIBRA product series is the only product series in commercial use today that uses the same version of Wi-LAN’s patented W-OFDM technology, commonly known as 256-FFT OFDM, which has been adopted by the WiMAX Forum* and approved as the mainstream physical layer in the IEEE 802.16 WirelessMAN Standard* and in the current draft of ETSI HiperMAN*. This Wireless Metropolitan Area Network (Wireless MAN) W-OFDM delivers robust outdoor non-line-of-sight performance that Wi-LAN has proven in various licensed and license-exempt commercial networks in over 30 countries worldwide. LIBRA is ideal for dense urban environments.
  • Wi-LAN’s Ultima3 product series is designed to meet the needs of license-exempt wireless Internet service providers, telecommunications companies, and enterprises looking to build or extend broadband communications infrastructures. Using a cellular-based frequency reuse point-to-multipoint network design linked by point-to-point units, Wi-LAN's Ultima3 solution can easily serve a large customer base. Coverage cells can be added and expanded quickly and cost effectively. By starting small and expanding, network operators experience early profits, and enterprises realize incremental cost savings. Ultima3 is based on Wi-LAN’s patented MC-DSSS technology.
  • Wi-LAN’s VIP 110-24 is easy to install, operates over long distances, overcomes many non-line-of-sight obstacles and provides economic performance and capacity in the license-exempt 2.4 GHz frequency band. VIP 110-24 uses Wi-LAN's anypoint-to-multipoint VINE technology to deal with non-line-of-sight limitations in a cost-effective manner by using established network nodes as repeaters and routers for other nodes that either do not have line-of-sight or are too distant to have direct connectivity to the Internet node. The VINE architecture thus can have significantly lower implementation costs than conventional cell based networks, particularly for widely dispersed medium-density applications.
