Wi-LAN Products Reduce Network Operating Costs and Deployment Time While Increasing Bandwidth

CALGARY, Canada - June 23, 2003 - Wi-LAN Inc. (TSE:WIN),
a global provider of broadband wireless communications products and technologies, has provided its Ultima3 Series fixed wireless access products to link Calgary Wireless City Showcase Hotspots to the
Internet. The Showcase Hotspots, part of the new and exciting
Wireless City initiative officially launched today in Calgary, allow the public to access the Internet wirelessly.  Visitors to the Hotspots will
be able to send and receive e-mails, search the Web, and send or download files without being plugged in, using their own Wi-Fi
enabled laptop or PDA.

"Wi-LAN's products performed very well at the Wireless City - Spruce Meadows demonstration project, where they were used to provide the wireless backbone at several world-class equestrian events in 2002," said Richard Belzil, Director, Wireless City.  "We are very pleased to be using Wi-LAN's Ultima3 products to provide high-speed wireless connectivity for our new Calgary Wireless City Showcase Hotspots.  Wi-LAN is an excellent example of the depth of wireless expertise that resides in Calgary."

The four Showcase Hotspots, located at high-profile, high-traffic Calgary center locations, are linked together with Wi-LAN Ultima3 products, forming a wireless backbone that allows all four Hotspots to share a single wired connection to the Internet.  Wi-LAN’s complete wireless hotspot solution reduces usage of leased lines and shortens the deployment time, while providing multi-layered data security. The Ultima3 product provides bandwidth of 12 megabits-per-second (Mbps), or more than 6 times the speed of a leased T1 line.

"Wi-Fi Hotspots are an emerging growth market, and our products provide the ideal backhaul solution for them," said Wanda Posehn, Vice President Canadian Sales, Wi-LAN Inc. "With wireless backhaul, service providers can concentrate several hotspots into a single Internet access point, improving their business case by reducing the operating costs of leased lines, speeding up the deployment of the network and providing bandwidth well in excess of T1 or ADSL, without sacrificing security.  We are very pleased to continue to support the Wireless City initiative and demonstrate the benefits of broadband wireless data communications in our home market."

Fringe Solutions Inc., a Calgary based provider of network engineering services, supplied network design and installation services for the project.

"Wi-LAN's Ultima3 products, like prior generations of Wi-LAN equipment, are very reliable and secure," said Sami Dent, President of Fringe Solutions Inc. "In addition, this latest generation of Wi-LAN products feature a single unit design, making them easier to install, and advanced features, functionality, monitoring and management capabilities that are an example of the high standards they set in fixed wireless access systems."

Wi-LAN offers a complete solution to Wi-Fi hotspot providers. Service providers and companies interested in offering a hotspot service at their locations should contact Wi-LAN Global Sales (see contact information below) or their local Wi-LAN sales representative.

Calgary Wireless City Showcase Hotspots are located at Olympic Plaza, the W.R. Castell Calgary Public Library, the Calgary Municipal Building, and Stephen Avenue Walk.  The Calgary Municipal Building is wired to the Internet, and uses a point-to-multipoint Ultima3 AP (Access Point) to provide connectivity to the other three hotspots. Each of the other hotspots utilize an Ultima3 CPE (Customer Premise Equipment) unit to connect back to the Ultima3 AP at the Calgary Municipal Building. Additional Wireless City Hotspots are planned throughout Calgary, and each will be marketed with the distinctive Wireless City Hotspot logo to notify the public that wireless Internet access is available. >
