Iskon Internet Purchases Wi-LAN’s W-OFDM Based LIBRA Products for Licensed 3.5 GHz Metropolitan Broadband Wireless Network Deployments

CALGARY, Canada and ZAGREB, Croatia - December 10, 2003 - Wi-LAN Inc. (TSX:WIN), a global provider of broadband wireless communications products and technologies, and Micro-Link d.o.o., a Croatian distributor and system integrator of wireless communication systems for digital data transmission, today announced Iskon Internet d.d., a leading Internet service provider in Croatia, has purchased Wi-LAN’s W-OFDM based LIBRA fixed wireless access products for deployment in Zagreb, Croatia’s capital city with a population of approximately 800,000. Iskon is rolling out its licensed 3.5 GHz SKYNET broadband wireless network to customers and Iskon is also the Internet service provider for the network. Wi-LAN products are being supplied and installed by Micro-Link. Additional sales of Wi-LAN products are expected to follow as Iskon Internet moves into further phases of its broadband wireless network deployment in Zagreb and other Croatian cities.

"We chose Wi-LAN's LIBRA 3000 series of products primarily because it enables true non-line-of-sight broadband wireless deployments," said Mr. Damir Sabol, Managing Director, Iskon Internet. "LIBRA 3000 provides access to customers who could not receive service using conventional fixed wireless access equipment because LIBRA’s W-OFDM technology allows non-line-of-sight capability, which significantly increases subscriber coverage. Non-line-of-sight also makes installation much simpler and less costly."

"We have had much success with Wi-LAN's LIBRA 3000 products and have been deploying them in Croatia and the surrounding region during 2003 ," said Dragutin Jankovic, Key Account and Business Development Director, Micro-Link. "Wi-LAN’s LIBRA 3000 applies a 256 Fast Fourier Transformation, or FFT, while all other products available in the market apply only 64 FFT, which is outdated technology and is not in accordance with the new wireless metropolitan area network standards. Now that initial infrastructure has been built, we expect that deployment of this product will increase over the next few years as operators scale up their networks."

"Our 3.5 GHz LIBRA 3000 series products have been very popular in Europe," said Adrian Wheeler, Regional Director, Europe, Wi-LAN Inc. "We have now sold LIBRA 3000 to various operators throughout Europe.

Many of these networks, such as Iskon’s SKYNET network in Zagreb, are in their early stages and have much excess capacity, so we expect continuing sales from them as operators acquire more customers."
"Croatia is one of over 30 countries in which we have sold our W-OFDM based products," said Nico Roelofsen, Vice President, Global Sales, Wi-LAN Inc. "Operators everywhere are very excited about the high throughput, non-line-of-sight capability, ease of installation, robustness and reliability of the LIBRA product series."

LIBRA 3000 is the 3.5 GHz version of Wi-LAN’s third generation series of Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS) Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) products based on Wi-LAN’s patented W-OFDM (Wide-band Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) technology. LIBRA is the only product series in commercial use today that uses the same W-OFDM technology, commonly known as 256-FFT OFDM, which has been adopted by the WiMAX Forum* and approved as the mainstream physical layer in the IEEE 802.16 WirelessMAN Standard* and in the current draft of ETSI HiperMAN*. This Wireless Metropolitan Area Network (Wireless MAN) W-OFDM delivers robust outdoor NLOS performance that Wi-LAN has proven in various commercial networks in over 30 countries worldwide. NLOS capability significantly increases fixed wireless access subscriber coverage. NLOS also makes installation much simpler and less costly, reducing the service provider’s required investment. Installers require only the general direction of the base station in order to install the products; installers then call the network operation center to activate the link. The installation is typically completed in under an hour and does not require RF-qualified installers. A PDA and quick menu setup can be used to facilitate the installation if required. LIBRA also offers tiered service management through CIR/MBR (Committed Information Rate / Maximum Burst Rate). The lightweight single unit design eliminates the need for expensive accessories and coaxial cable, is faster and less expensive to install, and can be mounted indoors or outdoors without the need for any climate control. These characteristics combine to significantly improve the service provider’s business model by providing an improved return on a smaller required investment and a much shorter investment payback period.

Wi-LAN designs and markets a broad line of fixed wireless access products with features that match customer requirements and various network topographies.
