Adino Purchases Wi-LAN's VINE Based Products for State-Wide Network in India

CALGARY, Canada and CALCUTTA, India - May 29, 2003 - Wi-LAN Inc. (TSE:WIN), a global provider of broadband wireless communications products and technologies, and Adino Telecom Limited (Adino), India's premier broadband solutions company, today announced Wi-LAN's VINE based VIP 110-24 fixed wireless access products and accessories will be deployed in the Gujarat State Wide Area Network (GSWAN). GSWAN, which has been operational for two years, will be expanded using the VIP 110-24 products to provide voice, video and data services for many additional offices and departments of the State Government. Adino's initial purchase order is currently being filled and Adino expects to order approximately $350,000 (US$225,000) of Wi-LAN's VIP 110-24 products over the next 12 months. Additional sales of Wi-LAN products are expected to follow as GSWAN moves into further phases of its network buildout.

After extensive field trials and demonstrations, we chose Wi-LAN's VIP 110-24 products because of their ease of installation, robustness, reliability and VINE technology," said Mr. R.K. Dave, Engineer-In-Charge of the Project, IT Department, Government of Gujarat. "The VIP 110-24 units will allow us to provide voice services to many of our offices and departments and avoid leased line costs. In addition, we will be able to provide previously unavailable video and high speed data services."

"We won this contract through a competitive tender when the State Government realized that Wi-LAN's turnkey wireless network solution and very reliable, high-performance VIP 110-24 product series would meet their wireless data, voice and video requirements," said Mr. S. Ramchandra of Adino Telecom. "Initially we will connect government offices within five kilometers of the State's district offices, and we expect to do see further sales as we expand to offices beyond five kilometers."

Gujarat state is situated on the western shore of India, bounded by the Arabian Sea to the west and southwest and Pakistan to the northwest. It has a population in excess of 50 million and is one of India's wealthiest and most industrialized states. Gujarat has a strong agricultural economy, and other major industries include textiles, petroleum, cement, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, fertilizers and petrochemicals.

"This contract gives us an opportunity to showcase the capabilities of VIP 110-24 for a major state government in India," said Nico Roelofsen, Vice President, Global Sales, Wi-LAN Inc. "We are very pleased to have Adino as a distributor and value-added reseller of our products, and we look forward to their continued success."

"The GSWAN Project supports government efforts to become more efficient and improve education through broadband wireless connectivity," said Terry Wason, Regional Sales Manager, India and Southeast Asia, Wi-LAN Inc. "There is great potential for growth of fixed wireless access networks in India, and this contract has potential to kick-start many similar sales in the future."

Wi-LAN's VIP 110-24 Product
The VIP 110-24 is easy to install, operates over long distances, overcomes many Non-Line of Sight (NLOS) obstacles and provides economic performance and capacity in the license-exempt 2.4 GHz frequency band. The product now features VINE 2.0 software, which offers a built-in IP (Internet Protocol) stack, supporting SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol). The built-in IP stack allows the network operator to assign a unique IP address to each VIP 110-24 in the network. Once the IP configuration is initialized, each VIP 110-24 can be managed and monitored remotely via SNMP. With this upgrade, network providers realize cost savings beginning at network deployment and continuing as they maintain and expand their networks.

The VINE Advantage
Wi-LAN's patent-pending anypoint-to-multipoint VINE (Versatile Intelligent Network Environment) technology permits the implementation of long distance, medium subscriber density broadband Internet access networks a node-at-a-time. VINE networks deal with Non-Line of Sight (NLOS) limitations in a cost-effective manner by using established network nodes as repeaters for other nodes that either do not have Line-of-Sight or are too distant to have direct connectivity to the Internet node. VINE networks thus can have significantly lower implementation costs than conventional cell based networks particularly when covering large sparsely populated areas.
