Radionet Brings Extensive City-Wide Wireless Network Experience in the World’s Most Unwired Region

CALGARY, Canada and ESPOO, Finland - June 25, 2003 -        Wi-LAN Inc. (TSE:WIN), a global provider of broadband wireless communications products and technologies, and Radionet Ltd., a Finnish wireless technology company specializing in the development, design and sale of city-wide outdoor wireless broadband networks, have joined forces to market Wi-LAN’s broadband fixed wireless access products in Finland and other Nordic countries. Radionet will now offer Wi-LAN’s products to telecommunications operators, Internet service providers (ISPs), telephone companies, business enterprises and system integrators for point-to-multipoint last mile access and point-to-point backhaul configurations.

"Wi-LAN's broadband fixed wireless access products provide robust, industrial strength broadband wireless network solutions for our growing customer base," said Robert Seren, Chief Executive Officer, Radionet. "Wi-LAN's solutions will allow our customers to easily expand their existing IEEE 802.11 standard-based broadband wireless networks and offer services such as mobility, high-speed Internet access and data transmission."

Available in license-exempt and licensed frequency bands, Wi-LAN’s broadband fixed wireless access products are certified for deployment in most countries worldwide.  Wi-LAN products are designed for commercial outdoor broadband wireless networks and are capable of high-density non-line-of-sight (NLOS) point-to-multipoint configurations, medium-density ad-hoc networks, and long-distance point-to-point backhaul applications.

"The Nordic countries are commonly considered the international hot spot for wireless communication, including wireless Internet, with the highest wireless penetration rates in the world and some of the world's largest telecommunication equipment manufacturers headquartered there," said Nico Roelofsen, Vice President, Global Sales, Wi-LAN Inc. "Wi-LAN has seen success in this market, and we are very pleased to build on that success with the support of our new partner, Radionet."

"Radionet's broad experience in deploying city-wide networks throughout Finland makes them an ideal partner for marketing our broadband fixed wireless access products in the Nordic region, and Wi-LAN's products, with their long-range, high capacity and non-line-of-sight capabilities, are an ideal complement to Radionet's existing 802.11 standard-based product line" said Adrian Wheeler, Regional Director, Europe, Wi-LAN Inc.  "I expect this new relationship will definitely be a win-win for both companies."

Wi-LAN’s three patented technologies, W-OFDM, MC-DSSS and VINE, form the basis for its three primary product series, Broadband Wireless Systems (BWS, including LIBRA), Advanced Wireless Ethernet systems (AWE, including Ultima3), and Vine Internet Protocol systems (VIP 110-24).

Notes:   (1)  The W-OFDM Advantage
Wi-LAN’s patented Wide-Band Orthogonal Frequency
Division Multiplexing (W-OFDM) technology is a variation of OFDM that further improves its characteristics. The signal reception is corrected for distortions, allowing greater transmission speeds, and the signal is processed to maximize the range and multipath resistance. W-OFDM allows spectrally efficient, non-line-of-sight, point-to-multipoint wireless networks to be implemented while minimizing interference with adjacent networks.

            (2)  The MC-DSSS Advantage
Wi-LAN's patented Multi-Code Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum technology (MC-DSSS) makes it possible to multiply the carrying capacity of traditional spread spectrum systems by as much as ten times.

            (3)  The VINE Advantage
Wi-LAN's patent-pending Versatile Intelligent Network Environment (VINE) technology permits the implementation of long distance, medium subscriber density, broadband Internet access networks a node-at-a-time. VINE networks deal with Non-Line of Sight (NLOS) limitations in a cost-effective manner by using an anypoint-to-multipoint topology.  Established network nodes can be used as repeaters for other nodes that do not have either Line-of-Sight or direct connectivity to the base station node.

            (4)  An ISP (Internet Service Provider) is an organization
that provides Internet access to its customers.  Other
services, such as voice communication and video
broadcast, may be bundled with the Internet access service.

(5)  NLOS (Non-Line-of-Sight) capability allows fixed wireless access networks to be configured without the requirement that antennas at the customer premises locations be visible from the base station antenna. This capability increases fixed wireless access subscriber coverage, from conventional levels of 50% or less, to levels that can exceed 90%, making the wireless service provider’s business model much more compelling.

            (6)  CPE (Customer Premise Equipment) is the equipment that resides at the customer premise location.
