Hermes Technology Chooses Wi-LAN’s VIP 110-24 Product for Oceania Broadband Wireless Networks

(CALGARY, Canada and CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand - April 8, 2002) - Wi-LAN Inc. (TSE:WIN), a global innovator of high-speed wireless data/Internet communications, today announced it has signed an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) agreement with Hermes Technology Limited (Hermes Technology) for more than $6 million (more than US$4 million) of its VIP 110-24 product over a two-year period. Hermes Technology intends to sell the product to rural broadband wireless service providers in New Zealand, Australia and surrounding island countries.

"After searching the world over, I have found Wi-LAN's VIP 110-24 product to be the most appropriate solution for our customers to provide broadband wireless service to rural areas in Oceania," said Waldemar Brodowski, Managing Director of Hermes Technology. "With this product our customers can roll out their networks one customer at a time with significantly lower deployment costs than conventional cell-based networks. The professional and knowledgeable team at Wi-LAN has given me the confidence to conclude this agreement in record time."

The agreement includes a commitment from Hermes Technology to purchase more than US$4 million of Wi-LAN’s VIP 110-24 product and components over the next two years, in monthly increments.

"We are excited to be signing our first major agreement for the New Zealand and Australia region," said Nico Roelofsen, Vice President, International Sales, Wi-LAN Inc. "With this agreement we can now add Hermes Technology to our growing worldwide network of Wi-LAN equipment providers."

The VIP 110-24 Advantage

The VIP 110-24 product incorporates Wi-LAN’s patent-pending anypoint-to-multipoint VINE technology, which permits the implementation of long distance, medium subscriber density broadband Internet access networks a node-at-a-time. VINE networks deal with Non-Line of Sight (NLOS) limitations in a cost-effective manner by using established network nodes as repeaters for other nodes that either do not have Line-of-Sight or are too distant to have direct connectivity to the Internet node. VINE networks thus can have significantly lower costs than conventional cell based networks particularly when covering large sparsely populated areas. The VIP 110-24 is easy to install, operates over long distances, overcomes many NLOS obstacles and provides economic performance and capacity in the license-exempt 2.4 GHz frequency band.
