Software Upgrade Significantly Reduces Network Management Costs and Certification in China Greatly Increases Market Size

(CALGARY, Canada and SANTA BARBARA, California - May 1, 2002) - Wi-LAN Inc. (TSE:WIN), a global innovator of high-speed wireless data/Internet communications, announced today that its VIP 110-24 product, which incorporates its patent-pending VINE technology, now features software that enables service providers to remotely manage their networks. In addition, the VIP 110-24 has recently been certified for use by the State Regulatory Radio Commission (SRRC) of the Peoples' Republic of China. With this certification, the VIP 110-24 is certified for use in all major telecommunications markets worldwide, having previously received USA Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Industry Canada (IC) and the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) certifications.

"The software upgrade allows wireless network service providers deploying the VIP 110-24 product to reduce their network deployment and maintenance costs substantially by managing their network from one central location," said Hank Macchio, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer of Wi-LAN Inc. "Certification in China makes the VIP 110-24 available for sale in today's fastest growing fixed wireless access market."

The VIP 110-24 is easy to install, operates over long distances, overcomes many Non-Line of Sight (NLOS) obstacles and provides economic performance and capacity in the license-exempt 2.4 GHz frequency band. The product now features VINE 2.0 software, which offers a built-in IP (Internet Protocol) stack, supporting SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol). The built-in IP stack allows the network operator to assign a unique IP address to each VIP 110-24 in the network. Once the IP configuration is initialized, each VIP 110-24 can be managed and monitored remotely via SNMP. With this upgrade, network providers realize cost savings beginning at network deployment and continuing as they maintain and expand their networks. VINE 2.0 is available for download from Wi-LAN's web site,

The VINE Advantage

Wi-LAN’s patent-pending anypoint-to-multipoint VINE (Versatile Intelligent Network Environment) technology permits the implementation of long distance, medium subscriber density broadband Internet access networks a node-at-a-time. VINE networks deal with Non-Line of Sight (NLOS) limitations in a cost-effective manner by using established network nodes as repeaters for other nodes that either do not have Line-of-Sight or are too distant to have direct connectivity to the Internet node. VINE networks thus can have significantly lower implementation costs than conventional cell based networks particularly when covering large sparsely populated areas.
