Working Group Meets to Advance Wireless Networking Standard

CALGARY, Canada - May 21, 2002 - Wi-LAN Inc. (TSE:WIN), a global innovator of high-speed wireless data/Internet communications, announced today that it is hosting a meeting of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Standards Association's 802.16 Working Group from May 20 to May 24, 2002 in Calgary, Canada. The group is working to finalize the universal standard for Fixed Broadband Wireless Access Systems in the 2-11 GHz radio frequencies.

"The universal standard for 2-11 GHz Fixed Broadband Wireless Access Systems, under development in the 802.16a project, will be of great benefit to wireless broadband equipment builders and service providers," said Dr. Roger B. Marks, Chair, IEEE 802.16 Working Group. "It will allow the creation and deployment of efficient, high-speed wireless metropolitan area network equipment that is interoperable, regardless of its source. We are pleased that Wi-LAN volunteered to host this meeting."

IEEE Standard 802.16, published last month, defines a standard for Broadband Wireless Access Systems operating over 11 GHz. The project advanced at this meeting will enhance the physical layer (PHY) and medium access control layer (MAC) of the existing standard to optimize it for radio frequencies from 2 to 11 GHz.

"Wi-LAN has always valued the importance of creating an interoperable world standard for fixed wireless access equipment," said Shawn Taylor, Chief Scientist of Wi-LAN Inc. and host of the session. "We are pleased to host this meeting and will continue to support the 802.16 Working Group through to completion of this standard."

Shawn Taylor was recently promoted to Chief Scientist of Wi-LAN, in addition to his position as Manager of Advanced Technology, to reflect the level of commitment and success that he has shown, both as leader of the Wi-LAN team participating in the IEEE 802.16 and the ETSI HiperMAN working groups, and in the development of Wi-LAN's leading-edge broadband wireless products.

About IEEE 802.16
The IEEE 802.16 Working Group on Broadband Wireless Access Standards is creating the WirelessMANTM family of standards for wireless metropolitan area networks. The mission of Working Group 802.16 is "to develop standards and recommended practices to support the development and deployment of fixed broadband wireless access systems." 802.16 is a unit of the 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee, the premier transnational forum for wired and wireless networking standardization. Details on the Working Group, its standards, and its projects are available at wirelessman.org.
