Wi-Comm United Communications Inc. Anticipates Growing Demand in China for Wi-LAN's New 5.8 GHz Products

Calgary, Canada - May 30, 2002 - Wi-LAN Inc. (TSE:WIN), a global innovator of high-speed wireless data/Internet communications, today announced it has received a twelve-month purchase order for a minimum of $2.5 million (US$1.65 million) of Wi-LAN's new Ultima3 ER (Extended Range) and RD (Rapid Deployment) products from Wi-Comm United Communications Inc. (WCU), a major reseller of Wi-LAN products to the Chinese marketplace, headquartered in Beijing. Monthly product shipments will begin in June 2002.

"We are pleased to have achieved another milestone with WCU in the Chinese market," said Nico Roelofsen, Vice President, International Sales, Wi-LAN Inc. "This is the second purchase order that we have announced with WCU this year, and we expect more to come. Chinese regulators, operators, our resellers and their customers are all embracing wireless as a reliable and cost effective alternative in today's broadband access market."

This purchase order is in addition to the $9 million order from WCU announced in January 2002 for Wi-LAN'S W-OFDM based BWS products. This new purchase order is for the AWE 120-58 Ultima3 ER and RD point-to-point products being deployed in the 5.8 GHz band. Additional sales for point-to-multipoint products in the Ultima3 series may follow.

"The Ultima3 products are a very good fit for the Chinese market," said Lok Chow, President of WCU. "In China the 2.4 GHz band has been regulated for indoor use, so telecom operators and internet service providers are looking for outdoor wireless access solutions that work in the 5.8 GHz band. The high performance and system stability of Wi-LAN's MC-DSSS technology are well known to most of our clients in China, and the outstanding features of the Ultima3, including the rugged single-unit design, set a new standard for the 5.8 GHz frequency band. We are working with major clients using Wi-LAN's Ultima3 products, and we expect to be able to announce the results of our efforts soon."

Wi-LAN's January 2002 purchase order from WCU is for Wi-LAN's BWS products designed for the licensed 3.5 GHz band, and is currently underpinned by orders from end-user customers ChinaComm and ChinaSat, two of the six major telecommunications operators deploying broadband wireless networks in China. More tenders and orders are expected to follow as the Ministry of Information Industry (MII), the super-agency overseeing telecommunications, multimedia, broadcasting, satellites, and the Internet in China, issues additional licenses for 3.5 GHz spectrum for city-wide deployments.

In January 2002 Wi-LAN announced its 20% ownership of Wi-Comm Communications Co. Ltd. (WCC), a Chinese joint venture company based in Beijing, China. Wi-LAN has no ownership interest in Wi-Comm United Communications Inc. (WCU).
