Wi-LAN Receives Official OFDM Certification by FCC

Wi-LAN is First Company Certified To Sell OFDM Products in Unlicensed 2.4 GHz Band

Calgary, Canada
June 5, 2001

Wi-LAN Inc. (TSE: WIN), an innovator of high-speed wireless data/Internet communications, today announced that it has received official certification for its patented W-OFDM technology from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the U.S. regulatory body responsible for telecommunications. This certification officially authorizes the sale of Wi-LAN's BWS 300-24 W-OFDM product for use in the unlicensed 2.4 GHz frequency band, and opens the door for certification of Wi-LAN's next-generation W-OFDM products in the 2.4 GHz band.

The FCC certification, in addition to those already received from the relevant regulatory bodies in both Europe and Canada, now allows Wi-LAN to provide a more spectrally efficient wireless product globally in the 2.4 GHz band," said Hatim Zaghloul, Wi-LAN's Chairman and CEO. "This certification provides another wireless option for this frequency band, which is expected to result in greater demand for Wi-LAN's wireless solutions and the establishment of more OFDM-based wireless communications standards."

This certification reflects a waiver issued by the FCC to allow sales of Wi-LAN's W-OFDM technology in the 2.4 GHz band. The original certification application by Wi-LAN in the unlicensed 2.4 GHz frequency band had been denied by the FCC on the basis that OFDM technology did not meet the specified definitions of a "spread spectrum system" or a "direct sequence system" and therefore did not meet the intent of the FCC rules. Today, Wi-LAN has approval to sell and distribute the product in the 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia and all U.S. territories regulated by the FCC.

About W-OFDM
Wi-LAN's Wideband Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (W-OFDM) is a transmission scheme that enables data to be encoded on multiple high-speed radio frequencies concurrently. This allows for greater security, increased amounts of data being sent, and the industry's most efficient use of bandwidth. W-OFDM enables the implementation of low power multipoint RF networks that minimize interference with adjacent networks. This reduced interference enables independent channels to operate within the same band allowing multipoint networks and point-to-point backbone systems to be overlaid in the same frequency band.
