Certification in the License-Exempt 2.4 GHz ISM Frequency Band Gives Company Foothold in Burgeoning Chinese Market

February 27, 2001

Wi-LAN Inc. (TSE:WIN), an innovator of high-speed wireless data communications technology and products, announced today that its 12-megabit-per-second (Mbps) advanced wireless Ethernet bridge (AWE 120-24), and the company's W-OFDM based broadband wireless access point (BWS 300-24 Access Point) have been approved for use in the 2.4 GHz ISM Frequency band in China by the State Regulatory Radio Commission (SRRC), the government agency that regulates spectrum allocation licensing.

"Internet use in China has grown from 8 million users in 1999 to 21 million users to date creating substantial demand for high-speed products with high bandwidth," said Lok Chow, president Wincomm Communications Inc., Wi-LAN's Gold Certified Channel Partner. "With a throughput of 12 megabits-per-second for the AWE 120-24 and 30 megabits-per-second for the BWS Access Point, Wi-LAN's high-speed broadband wireless access solutions are the best choice in a market that requires efficient wireless access."

Wi-LAN's products are ideal for fixed wireless access service providers looking to offer high-speed wireless Internet access or implement backhaul solutions. Supporting point-to-multipoint, point-to-point, and backhaul applications, the products can also be used by corporate enterprises to extend communications infrastructures. Through Wincomm Communications, Wi-LAN's AWE 120-24 (12Mbps, MC-DSSS) has been used to build a metropolitan access network to cover the city of ShenZhen.

"The approval of Wi-LAN's products is a milestone for the company in China, as it helps solidify our presence in the international wide area network market," said Graham Smith, Wi-LAN's chief sales and marketing officer. "With the growing requirement for high-speed Internet access, and the low cost of wireless deployment compared to fibre and copper, we believe China has the potential to be a lucrative market."

Wi-LAN's advanced wireless Ethernet bridges, built with the company's patented Multi-code Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (MC-DSSS) technology, supports constant service over distance through increased data rates and enhanced reliability. MC-DSSS technology also makes Wi-LAN advanced wireless Ethernet bridges secure, thanks to built-in data scrambling that prevents unwanted eavesdropping.

Wi-LAN's broadband wireless access system is powered by the company's patented Wide-band Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (W-OFDM) technology, which enhances multi-path capabilities for superior signal reception and data throughput.
