Wi-LAN Inc. (TSE:WIN), a leading innovator in the field of wireless data/Internet communications, today announced the appointment of Dr. Sayed-Amr (Sisso) El-Hamamsy as Chief Operating Officer (COO), effective January 8, 2001. Dr. El-Hamamsy holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering and has 15 years of high technology industry experience, with expertise in leading operations, product development and delivery.

"Sisso is an expert in taking a project from conceptualization to production and delivery," said Hatim Zaghloul, Wi-LAN chairman and CEO. "Wi-LAN is dedicated to maintaining expedient product delivery schedules across all of our product lines and Sisso has a proven track record of delivering on time."

In the position of COO, Dr. El-Hamamsy will lead the development of Wi-LAN's I.WiLL(tm) product line, which uses Wi-LAN's patented Wide-band Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (W-OFDM) technology, as well as the Hopper Plus(tm) family of products. Dr. El-Hamamsy will also be responsible for supply chain operations, quality, and information systems.

"My business experiences enable me to assist Wi-LAN in its drive to deliver on the opportunities which are ahead of us and our customers," said Dr. El-Hamamsy. "I look forward to joining a very strong team of professionals at Wi-LAN."

For the past 15 years, Dr. El-Hamamsy held several high-level management positions at General Electric (GE) in New York. In his most recent position as e-Engineering Leader, Dr. El-Hamamsy was responsible for a company-wide initiative to digitize engineering processes and tools to make them Internet capable. He was also responsible for the infrastructure and support that ensured the successful deployment of the tools and applications.

Prior to that, Dr. El-Hamamsy was manager of the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Program at GE where he drove large-scale projects to timely completion, implemented key elements of the medium and long-term technology roadmap for the business and helped set the MRI business' vision and strategy.

Both Dr. El-Hamamsy and Wi-LAN's chief sales and marketing officer, Graham Smith, will report to Wi-LAN president, Bill Hews. This enables Mr. Hews to have a broader, more strategic focus, and to integrate Wi-LAN's WAN business and Wi-LAN's affiliates, TIL-TEK and DTS.

"Sisso and Graham complete Wi-LAN's high-level management team," said Bill Hews, Wi-LAN president. "Sisso's leadership qualities and competence in fast time-to-market are an excellent addition to Wi-LAN and we look forward to his enthusiasm and skill set."

Dr. El-Hamamsy earned a PhD in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Computer Science from the California Institute of Technology as well as degrees in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics.
