Wi-LAN's New 5.8 GHz Product Offers Superior Performance in Point-to-Multipoint Applications

2.4 GHz and New 5.8 GHz Advanced Wireless Ethernet Bridges Provide Enhanced Functionality with 'Smart' Features

San Francisco, California
February 19, 2001

Wi-LAN Inc. (TSE: WIN), an innovator of high-speed wireless data/Internet communications, today at the Broadband Wireless World Forum (BWWF) launched the AWE 120-58, a new 12-megabit-per-second advanced wireless Ethernet bridge for use in the 5.8 GHz unlicensed frequency band. The company is also showcasing its 12-megabit-per-second advanced wireless Ethernet bridge that operates in the 2.4 GHz unlicensed frequency band. Both products support point-to-multipoint, point-to-point and backhaul applications.

"The new Wi-LAN AWE 120-58 complements our current portfolio of versatile and dependable products in the license-exempt frequency bands, with the most cost effective products in the marketplace," said Graham Smith, Wi-LAN chief sales and marketing officer. "Our customers now have the freedom to choose either product, or they have the option of combining them in their networks to enable a best-in-class solution."

Wi-LAN's AWE 120-58 and AWE 120-24 (formerly Hopper Plus 120-24) advanced wireless Ethernet bridges are ideal for broadband wireless access service providers looking to offer high-speed Internet access. The products can also be used by corporate enterprises to build and extend communications infrastructures. Both products support point-to-multipoint, point-to-point, and backhaul applications.

Wi-LAN advanced wireless Ethernet bridges do much more than conventional wireless Ethernet bridges. Unlike ordinary bridges that provide basic data transfer, Wi-LAN's advanced wireless Ethernet bridges offer enhanced functionality with "smart" features, improving data and network management capabilities.

For example, Wi-LAN products provide user management features valuable to ISPs, such as VLAN (802.1q) compatibility and the ability to offer flexible service entitlement to subscribers such as those in multi-dwelling units, business parks, and small/medium enterprises.

Wi-LAN products also work harder than competitive offerings because they're built with the company's patented Multi-code Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (MC-DSSS) technology, which supports constant service over distance through increased data rates, enhanced reliability, and the most superior cost-effective performance for your investment. MC-DSSS technology also makes Wi-LAN advanced wireless Ethernet bridges the most secure in the industry, thanks to built-in data scrambling that prevents unwanted eavesdropping.

The new Wi-LAN AWE 120-58 advanced wireless Ethernet bridge will be generally available in March 2001. Wi-LAN is currently taking customer orders. The Wi-LAN AWE 120-24 advanced wireless Ethernet bridge has been generally available since October 2000.
