Wi-LAN Subsidiary Clinches Chinese Market with Two Significant Partnerships

Calgary, Canada and Santa Barbara, Calif.
July 12, 2001

UC Wireless, a fixed wireless access company and wholly owned subsidiary of Wi-LAN Inc. (TSE: WIN), today announced it has signed two authorized distributor agreements for the Peoples Republic of China. The company has solidified partnerships with Sunbeam Technologies Development Corporation based in Beijing, China as well as Spectrum Communications Systems, a Chinese distributor headquartered in Auburn, California. These contracts will further strengthen UC Wireless’ sales channels throughout China and the Asia-Pacific market.

Both companies have access to distribute UC Wireless’ WinRouter 2050, an any-point-to-multipoint network product that incorporates UC Wireless’ proprietary Versatile Intelligent Network Environment (VINE) technology, which is used in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) applications and superior network build-out tools. In addition, UC Wireless’ LongRanger 2050 and LongRanger 2020 spread spectrum radios will be distributed to their network of resellers. These point-to-point links provide an off-the-shelf, ready-to-install solution to a number of long-range communication applications.

"Sunbeam and Spectrum will help UC Wireless to solidify its distribution channels in China and we are very excited about having these companies as major distributors for the Asia market," said Hank Macchio, President and CEO, UC Wireless. "We are confident that these relationships will thrive as UC Wireless continues to make its mark in China."

"This announcement is very timely as it highlights the foothold that both Wi-LAN and UC Wireless are gaining in the Chinese market," said Hatim Zaghloul, Chairman and CEO,
Wi-LAN. "Our synergies with our subsidiaries in this marketplace will only strengthen our breadth and depth and provide our customers superior products, services and technologies."

UC Wireless distributors receive many tools and the information required to succeed in the wireless networking equipment and services market. This enables resellers and partners to differentiate their business, gain higher levels of customer satisfaction and increase market share and profitability.

"We have been an authorized distributor of the LongRanger and WinRouter series of products for the past six years, and are pleased to renew our distribution agreement," said Bob Shuken, President of Spectrum. "We find these products to be an excellent balance of performance, price and functionality for the China market. UC Wireless, now a Wi-LAN company, has provided outstanding support to us in the past, and we are looking forward to an expanded relationship to include other Wi-LAN products in the future."
