SkyberNet's Acquisition of Winstar Drives Business for Wi-LAN

Calgary, Canada and Hoofddorp, The Netherlands
May 30, 2001

Skybernet becomes the largest wireless service provider in The Netherlands by acquiring Winstar.

Wi-LAN (TSE:WIN), an innovator of high-speed wireless data/Internet communications, today announced as part of its existing supply agreement, it is supplying product to Skybernet, the largest wireless service provider in the Netherlands. SkyberNet, the Dutch provider of broadband and hosting services, recently completed the acquisition of Winstar's activities in the Benelux. This acquisition, which includes all Winstar activities in the Netherlands and Belgium, further strengthens the position of SkyberNet as an independent provider of telecom services to business users.

"We believe the acquisition of Winstar's activities strengthens our long-term strategy of becoming a leading independent provider of telecom services to business customers in the Benelux," says Erik Jennes, CEO of SkyberNet. "In addition, we were attracted to Winstar due its strong customer base, its network footprint, and its management team with many years of telecommunications experience."

SkyberNet currently uses Wi-LAN products for point-to-multipoint networking. By using Wi-LAN broadband wireless access products to extend from the existing infrastructure in the newly acquired network, SkyberNet will now be able to roll-out their wireless network with greater speed and efficiency.

"Because we use Wi-LAN equipment, we can continue offering the same services to the Winstar customers, but over a much more economical infrastructure," says Maarten Meijer, Manager of Marketing at SkyberNet. "In addition, we can also address the much larger market of SME customers, because the cost of connecting a single customer is lower."

Winstar Europe's Network Operating Center located in Livingston, Scotland has been transferred to Amsterdam to facilitate the operations of this large-scale network. SkyberNet will continue to provide a wide range of data and voice services to medium and large sized business users in The Netherlands. In Belgium, SkyberNet will continue operating the existing networks for its new customers in the Brussels area.

"Wi-LAN is excited about SkyberNet's growth within the service provider arena," says Graham Smith, Wi-LAN's Chief Sales and Marketing Officer. "This new customer base, network equipment and management team fits well into SkyberNet's current operation and organization, and we are committed to integrating our products into SkyberNet's business plan."
