Wi-LAN and DTS Demonstrate Gigabit Switch

Prototype is a Next Generation Interface for Service Providers Delivering Broadband Wireless Access in Licensed Frequencies Throughout the World

Calgary, Alberta
June 13, 2000

Wi-LAN Inc. (TSE:WIN), an innovator of high-speed wireless data/Internet communications, has partnered with its subsidiary, Digital Transmission Systems Inc. (DTS) (OTC:BB,DTSX), a US-based company that designs, manufactures and markets products for wireless telecommunications networks, to demonstrate a gigabit Ethernet prototype switch.

The demonstration, by DTS at Wi-LAN's booth at the SUPERCOMM tradeshow in Atlanta, was the first public display of an engineering design initiative by DTS to develop a multi-interface switch for the service provider market.

The DTS gigabit switch prototype supports a full suite of high-speed interfaces - DS-3, OC-3, OC-12 and ATM - which will eventually be offered as modules for LMDS products being developed by DTS and MMDS-type products being offered by Wi-LAN. Wi-LAN and DTS had announced in January 2000 that their partnership would enable DTS to develop LMDS products incorporating the Wideband Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (W-OFDM) wireless technology from Wi-LAN.

"We are pleased with DTS' efforts in developing practical interfaces for Ethernet switching applications," said Hatim Zaghloul, chairman and CEO, Wi-LAN Inc. "The demonstration at SUPERCOMM validates the power of the Wi-LAN-DTS partnership, and its ability to offer integrated solutions that take advantage of broadband wireless technology such as W-OFDM."

The Gigabit Ethernet and the 622 MB ATM switches from DTS are both fiber optic interface controllers that take advantage of the LMDS bandwidths (up to 800MHz in one direction) that can be achieved with W-OFDM technology. DTS is planning to integrate both an ATM switch and an Ethernet switch directly into the LMDS chassis, removing the need for additional hardware in implementing LMDS solutions.

"DTS is extremely proud of Wi-LAN's confidence in our ability to realize products that can match the power of broadband wireless technology from Wi-LAN," said Jim Chamberlin, vice president of marketing at DTS. "DTS' experience in building network access products for the wireless industry will prove valuable to Wi-LAN in the development of the next generation of LMDS products using W-OFDM broadband wireless technology."

About DTS:
