New Hopper Plus(TM) 120-24 Wireless Ethernet Bridge Offers Highest Effective Data Rates and Lowest Cost Per Megabit Available

Wi-LAN Inc. (TSE: WIN) an innovator of high-speed wireless data/Internet communications today began shipments to customers of its new 12-megabit-per-second (Mbps) Hopper Plus 120-24 Ethernet bridge, which delivers some of the highest effective data rates and the lowest cost per megabit in the industry.

Announced in July, Wi-LAN's Hopper Plus 120-24 is ideal for fixed wireless access service providers looking to offer high-speed wireless Internet access or implement backhaul solutions. It can also be used by corporate enterprises to extend communications infrastructures.

With a list price of US$2,695 and effective data rates of over 8 Mbps, the Hopper Plus 120-24 Ethernet bridge offers the best cost-per-megabit performance available today.

"We look forward to deploying these new units to complement our current portfolio of high-speed Internet and data services," said Wayne Sumarah, Vice President of Marketing, RSL COM Canada, which has already bench-tested the Hopper Plus 120-24 Ethernet bridge in point-to-point and point-to-multi-point configurations. RSL COM Canada (www.rslcom.ca) is the Canadian subsidiary of RSL Communications Ltd., a leading provider of integrated data, Internet and voice telecommunications services in 22 countries around the globe.

The Hopper Plus 120-24 is built with Wi-LAN's patented Multi-code Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (MC-DSSS) technology, for enhanced spectral efficiency, security, reliability and scalability. MC-DSSS technology increases data transfer rates and is key to effective data throughput of 8 Mbps, between one-and-a-half and two times faster than competing products.

"The Hopper Plus 120-24 is perfect for bandwidth-intensive applications, which require more than 4 Mbps throughput," explains Scott Campbell, Wi-LAN vice president of Product Management. "It compliments our existing Hopper Plus products, such as the Hopper Plus 45-24, which is geared to smaller applications of 4 Mbps throughput or less. Not only is the Hopper Plus 120-24 ideal for fixed wireless access applications, the product is also well-suited for private network applications given its cost effectiveness."

The Hopper Plus 120-24 wireless Ethernet bridge operates in the license-exempt 2.4 ISM GHz radio frequency band for wireless connections with no radio licensing requirements. The product has been certified by the Federal Communications Commission, Industry Canada and the European Telecommunications Standardization Institute.

The MC-DSSS Advantage:
Wi-LAN's patented MC-DSSS technology is the most spectrally efficient spread spectrum modulation scheme currently available. MC-DSSS enhances traditional direct sequence spread spectrum technology by employing "multi-code" or pseudo random noise spreading codes. This "multi-code" technology divides data into smaller packets and actually layers the packets allowing for twice the amount of data to be sent in tandem at one time. By employing multi-code, the result is a vast increase in data throughput without an increase in RF spectrum usage, ensuring ultimate spectral efficiency.
