Rapid Expansion Enables Move to New State-of-the-art Headquarters

Calgary, Alberta
September 18, 2000

Wi-LAN Inc. (TSE:WIN), an innovator of high-speed wireless data/Internet communications, today announced plans to move to a new 90,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility. The new complex has an expected completion date of early summer 2001.

"Wi-LAN has seen unprecedented growth over a very short period of time which has caused us to make future expansion plans," said Hatim Zaghloul, Wi-LAN chairman and CEO. "With our Calgary office remaining as the worldwide headquarters, we decided that a state-of-the-art facility combining our administrative, product design and testing, and R&D efforts would be appropriate."

Wi-LAN's growth shows no signs of slowing down. In less than one year, Wi-LAN's employee base has grown by nearly 300 per cent adding sales forces in the Middle East, Africa and South America to its international roster that already includes the United States and Europe. It currently employs more than 200 people, 144 in Calgary and has outgrown its two current locations in the city.

The new facility will be located in Calgary's technology-based northeast in the Sunridge Business Park at the corner of 16th Avenue (Trans-Canada Highway) and Barlow Trail N.E. Wi-LAN senior executives, Senator Nick Taylor, Dr. Lorne Taylor Alberta Minister of Innovation and Science, and Calgary Alderman Ray Jones unveiled plans for the new facility today.

"I'm extremely pleased to be here today to join in the celebration of Wi-LAN's unparalleled success in helping Calgary live up to its name as the 'wireless valley,'" said Senator Taylor. "Wi-LAN has proven to the world that it's the emerging leader in wireless telecommunications and I'm sure this growth spurt is a positive indication of more good things to come."

"Wi-LAN represents a proud success story for Albertans as a positive and significant contribution to this province's diversifying economy," said Dr. Lorne Taylor, Minister of Innovation and Science. "This planned expansion shows just how strong the high technology sector has become in Alberta especially in the leading-edge field of wireless research and innovation."

"The economic good times Calgary is facing right now is positive and I'm very happy to see that a diverse group of industries is helping to fuel the growth," said Alderman Jones. "Wi-LAN is a perfect example of one of the strong technology companies within our city who are making a significant contribution."
