Supply Agreement Will Use Wi-LAN Products for Data and Voice Networks in Central Washington

Calgary, Alberta
August 17, 2000

Wi-LAN Inc. (TSE:WIN), an innovator of high-speed wireless data/Internet communications, announced the signing of an 18 month supply agreement with Washington based Northwest Telephone Inc. a full service telecommunication service provider seeking to develop, test and deploy a broadband wireless network. Totalling US$1.75 million, the agreement will enable Northwest Telephone to build high-speed wireless broadband networks in central Washington. This agreement will facilitate Northwest Telephone's development of a broadband wireless access infrastructure that will provide both high-speed Internet and toll-quality voice over IP services to local and national ISP's.

Under terms of the agreement, Wi-LAN will initially supply Northwest Telephone with its 4.5 megabit per second (Mbps) and 12 Mbps 2.4GHz Hopper Plus (tm) wireless Ethernet bridges. Northwest Telephone will then incorporate products from Wi-LAN's I.WiLL(tm) product line, based on its Wideband-Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (W-OFDM) technology. Wi-LAN anticipates that the value of the agreement will see total revenues of US$1.75 million by December 2001, with US$300,000 in the first 3 months of the agreement.

"We are pleased that Northwest Telephone has selected Wi-LAN's broadband wireless solutions," says Bill Hews Wi-LAN president and COO. "This agreement is further validation that the needs of U.S. service providers are being met with our efficient high speed wireless network equipment."

With Wi-LAN's products, Northwest Telephone will offer 'last mile' high-speed Internet and toll-quality voice over IP services over a single network connection at a competitive price, creating significant benefits for business customers. The development of this network using wireless technology will enable a short deployment period to create a high-speed wireless point-to-multipoint system that is scaleable and easily expandable at a low investment per line. Northwest Telephone's plans offering not only high-speed Internet access, but also virtual private networks, interconnecting data and/or voice networks for its customers.

"We strongly believe Wi-LAN products and technology will help us provide our customers with the best high-speed wireless access," says Andrew Metcalfe, president Northwest Telephone. "We chose Wi-LAN as our partner because of the superior performance of their high-speed wireless data products coupled with their experience in developing wireless access networks."
