Wi-LAN Bolsters Presence in Africa with Key Sales Appointment

Former QUALCOMM Regional Manager Joins Wi-LAN's International Sales Team

Calgary, Alberta
July 14, 2000

Wi-LAN Inc. (TSE:WIN), an innovator of high-speed wireless data/Internet communications, today announced the appointment of Anthony Mallett as Director, Sub-Saharan Africa, International Sales, effective immediately.

Former regional manager of QUALCOMM Inc, Anthony has significant sales and marketing experience in start-up environments, and extensive knowledge of the global wireless telecommunications equipment market. He also brings numerous African contacts, broadening the potential sales pipeline in the region.

At Wi-LAN, Anthony will be responsible for identifying and qualifying market opportunities with public carriers and private networks in the African sub-Saharan market. In his role, he will operate in close cooperation with existing Wi-LAN channel partners and expand this network as needed.

"I'm thrilled to be part of the Wi-LAN sales team," said Anthony. "With my experience, I'm confident I can help Wi-LAN attain its sales objectives in the African region. Wi-LAN's products are well-suited to this emerging region, which requires a wireless high-speed data solution due to the current lack of wire line network infrastructure."

At QUALCOMM, Anthony was responsible for project management, sales and marketing, helping to deploy wireless networks in Nigeria and Mauritius. Prior to joining QUALCOMM, Anthony operated Telital Southern Africa, a distributor of cellular products from Telital S.p.a. Italy, and was marketing and sales director at World View Electronics, an entrepreneurial subsidiary of Plessey SA involved in importing, assembling and marketing OEM consumer electronic products.

"Anthony's knowledge and experience are a welcome addition to the Wi-LAN's international sales team," said Nico Roelofsen, vice-president, International Sales. "His presence will significant strengthen our sales efforts throughout Africa. There is an enormous potential for wireless in this continent and Anthony will be a great promoter and resource for our channel partners."
