Wi-LAN Adds Vice President Technology to Management Team

Former Harris and NovAtel Senior manager, Ramesh Uppal, Brings Significant High-Tech Experience to Wi-LAN

Wi-LAN Inc., a leading innovator in the field of wireless data/Internet communications, today announced the company has appointed Ramesh Uppal to the role of Vice President Technology, effective February 29, 2000. Mr. Uppal brings to Wi-LAN 26 years of extensive high-tech industry experience in creative product initiation and development, having worked for Harris Canada, NovAtel Communications, and Alberta Government Telephones.

As Director R&D and Quality for the Wireless Loop Business Unit of Harris Canada, Mr. Uppal led development of a number of Wireless Local Loop (WLL) Systems against tight deadlines. He also led Advanced Technology work in the areas of DSP based Software Radio, Higher Order Modulation schemes and WCDMA modems. His success with Harris Canada is evident in his ability to lead new product line initiatives to maturity. 

During his 14 years with NovAtel Communications, Mr. Uppal was responsible for establishing development teams of 50 to 100 engineers within a three to six month period. These teams were capable of developing high quality analog and digital cellular systems products for NovAtel and OEM customers. During his tenure with NovAtel, he also took a two-year assignment as Director of India Operations, where he studied the market requirements for WLL business in India and Bangladesh. He was responsible for establishing a local presence there, as well as for marketing NovAtel's products.

Wi-LAN is restructuring its engineering group and strengthening key processes in order to accelerate new product introduction. Addition of Mr. Uppal to the Technology team will enable Wi-LAN to gain a faster time-to-market for their new products based on leading technology platforms.
