Wi-LAN's Nine-month Unaudited Broadband Wireless Revenue More Than Double First Nine Months of Previous Year

Impact of Supplier Agreements to Bolster Revenues for 2001 and Beyond

Calgary, Alberta
August 15, 2000

Wi-LAN Inc. (TSE:WIN), a leading innovator in wireless data/Internet communications, announced unaudited revenue from its broadband wireless business, without revenue from US subsidiaries, for the three months ended July 31, 2000 of $3.5 million, more than two times third quarter revenues of $1.7 million in 1999. Wi-LAN's 2000 nine-month broadband wireless revenue was over $9 million, double Company revenues of $4.5 million for the same period in 1999.

"Our third quarter results and our commitment to continued growth are key to laying the foundation for driving multi-year service provider revenue," said Bill Hews, Wi-LAN president and COO. "Our third quarter successes with supply agreements, such as those inked with 4G Network Technologies and Skybernet, will supply revenue growth into 2001 and beyond."

Fourth quarter 2000 broadband wireless revenue is anticipated to be approximately triple fourth quarter 1999 revenue of $1.4 million. Current and projected future revenue growth includes product sales from Wi-LAN's preferred supplier agreements with two European broadband wireless access service providers, Tele2 (UK) and Sweden's Telia GlobalCast Internetworking AB, as well as Wireless Matrix AB, also of Sweden, which is a key distributor of Wi-LAN products. Sales to 4G Networks have also commenced as their initial rollout in Texas gets underway. The Skybernet network rollout is moving from a trial stage to deployment.

Some of Wi-LAN's supply agreements during
the Year 2000 include:

Earlier this year, Wi-LAN signed a 2-year, supply agreement with Telia, which forecasts purchasing US$16 million of Wi-LAN wireless product.

Following closely, Wi-LAN signed a one-year distribution agreement with Wireless Matrix, agreeing to purchase a minimum of US$12 million worth of Wi-LAN product in its first 12 months, having already signed its first purchase order for US$6 million.

On May 24, Wi-LAN announced a multi-year preferred supplier agreement in which Wi-LAN's I.WiLL(tm) products, based on its patented W-OFDM technology, will be used to expand Tele2 (UK)'s wireless network; total sales from this agreement are forecasted to be in excess of $6 million through to December 2001 and renewable annually thereafter. Tele2 (UK) provides high-speed wireless Internet access in the United Kingdom.

On June 7, Wi-LAN and 4G Network Technologies Inc. (4GNT), a developmental-stage company created to deploy an advanced wireless broadband network, announced a US$31 million 18-month purchase order as part of a five-year supply agreement. In this agreement, 4GNT will use Wi-LAN's Hopper Plus units and its new I.WiLL System over a 56-month period to construct a national U.S. and international high-speed broadband wireless network. Wi-LAN is expected to supply 4GNT with product worth more than US$1.4 billion between 2000 and 2004.

On July 20, Wi-LAN announced a US$45.5 million 43-month supply agreement with SkyberNet International BV, a company created to develop, deploy and operate broadband wireless communication services in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. The supply agreement includes sales of US $6 Million in the first 18 months.

Wi-LAN expects to release consolidated results for the nine months ended July 31, 2000 in mid September. All financial information in this document is reported in Canadian dollars, unless otherwise indicated.
