Philips Semiconductors and Wi-LAN Conduct Wireless Demonstration of IEEE 1394 Using W-OFDM Technology for Multimedia Home Networking

04/25/2000

Calgary, Alberta
April 25, 2000

i-LAN (TSE:WIN), an innovator in high-speed wireless data communications, and Philips Semiconductors, an
affiliate of Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE: PHG), today announced that they are conducting a series of IEEE 1394 wireless transmission demonstrations using Wi-LAN's patented Wideband Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing. The wireless technology demonstration, which is taking place at Microsoft's WinHEC (Windows Hardware Engineering Conference) in New Orleans (Ernest N. Morial Convention Centre, Hall C, on Microsoft's booth, number 700), will run three simultaneous channels of streaming MPEG files at 2.4 GHz. The series of demonstrations are designed to illustrate that 1394 and W-OFDM are capable of in-home multimedia networking today, and that consumer products could be available in the near future.

"These demonstrations will display the evolution of this technology, ultimately showing a consumer level product capability which will really excite people," said Kursat Kimyacioglu, manager, Wireless Connectivity, Philips Semiconductors. "Many Set Top Boxes and other consumer appliances are likely to feature 1394. Showing this wireless technology integrated in a Set Top Box and/or cable box will further demonstrate 1394's viability for a variety of consumer applications and products in the future."

The Demonstration:
At WinHEC, the Wireless IEEE 1394 Demonstrator will feature two Philips Semiconductors/Wi-LAN 1394 wireless bridges, two STBs (Set Top Boxes), two televisions and a MPEG Scope data stream generator, which contains three programs of Standard Definition video and audio. One STB will receive the MPEG over a parallel cable; select one of the three programs, decode it and display it on a television monitor. The wireless bridge box will receive the MPEG stream over a 1394 cable and arrange several 1394 (isochronous) packets into a radio packet and transmit it over the air. The other wireless bridge box will receive the radio packets and will reconstruct and transmit the MPEG stream. The second STB will receive the MPEG stream over 1394; select one of the three programs, decode it and display it on the second TV monitor. Each STB will be able to select a program independently because both are receiving a whole 16-Mbps stream.

The Evolution:
This demonstration will also highlight the evolution of this product from its original demonstration in August of 1999. At the IFA in Berlin, a similar demonstration was done using a 10 Mbps stream, containing two programs. The system performance and reliability has been improved and the WinHEC demonstration will use a 16 Mbps stream, 3 programs and high system reliability.

"The WinHEC demonstration is a huge step towards the realization that high-speed wireless consumer devices are just around the corner," said Hatim Zaghloul, CEO and chairman of Wi-LAN. "It's exciting that Wi-LAN's W-OFDM technology is playing a major role."
