April 13, 2000

The OFDM Forum, an organization focused on delivering one global standard for high-speed broadband wireless communications, today announced Wi-LAN Inc. (TSE:WIN), a leading innovator in high-speed wireless data communications, as the Chair of the OFDM Forum. Philips Semiconductors, a leading provider of communications, consumer and multimedia ICs, was appointed Vice Chair. The appointments were made at the recent OFDM Forum meeting held in San Jose, California on March 31, 2000. The Forum is also introducing new members which include: Alcatel, Carnegie Mellon University and The Testbed Center for Interoperability (TCFI) at University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB).

In addition to the Forum leadership appointments, each working group established a chair company which includes: Fixed Wireless Access with Nokia as the Chair, Wireless LAN (WLAN) including Home Multimedia and wireless personal area networks (WPANs) with Philips Semiconductors as the Chair and Wireless Road Access with SmartMove and TCFI at UCSB as co-chairs.

Presentations on these working groups were delivered, as well as candid discussions on advancing the efforts of these groups. The newly developed WLAN group discussed an OFDM-based solution anticipating the convergence between the next generation of high rate WPANs and WLANs. As the Fixed Wireless Access Chair, Nokia discussed the LAN/WAN interoperability for global communications. Philips Semiconductors, the Wireless LAN Chair, discussed pervasive wireless connectivity in the home by harmonizing the "PHY" and "MAC" layer with OFDM technology. This group presented the drive to develop products based on OFDM technology at consumer prices with targets set at single and multi-family dwelling.

"We are excited to be chairing the OFDM Forum, along with co-founder Philips Semiconductors," said Dr. Hatim Zaghloul, Wi-LAN Chairman and CEO. "We are continuing to make significant steps forward, by establishing Chair companies for our working groups, including Nokia, Philips Semiconductors and SmartMove and TCFI as well as organizing the participants within them."

"Philips Semiconductors strongly supports the initiatives of the OFDM Forum to create and achieve the harmonization of standards for next-generation high-speed wireless data products and services," said Kursat Kimyacioglu, Manager, Wireless Connectivity Products, Philips Semiconductors. "We are very pleased to participate in the Forum and look forward to continued progress as we move forward quickly."
