Wi-LAN Demonstrates First Mobile Application of W-OFDM Technology

Calgary, Alberta and Santa Barbara, California
January 27, 2000

Wi-LAN Inc., (TSE:WIN) an innovator of wireless data/Internet communication, has performed the first mobile application of W-OFDM (Wideband Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) technology. W-OFDM is a variation of OFDM, where the signal reception is corrected for distortions, allowing greater data transmission speeds over radio frequencies. The demonstration was built on Wi-LAN's I.WiLL(TM) 300-24 access point, a W-OFDM product that delivers speeds of 30 Mbps. This demonstration marks a significant milestone toward Wi-LAN's vision of Network Living(TM), true personal communications to anyone, anywhere, at anytime.

The Test-bed Center for Interoperability, an R&D Center operated by the California State Department of Transportation (Caltrans) hosted the demonstration, held on Highway 101 in Santa Barbara. Caltrans is responsible for planning, designing, building, operating, and maintaining California's state highway, rail, and mass transit systems, as well as implementing the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). ITS will be instrumental in delivering multimedia content and web-based applications to vehicles.

"The demonstration was truly impressive," said Ramez Gerges, Chief, Office of Communications Sytems Engineering, Caltrans, "W-OFDM technology has the potential of delivering ITS applications including multimedia in the vehicle mobile environment."

The high-speed demonstration proved successful as video streaming and file transfers were exchanged between two I.WiLL 300-24 access points at a data rate of 30 Mbps. One access point was located in a traffic cabinet on Highway 101, transmitting to another access point in a moving vehicle, traveling at speeds up to 70 miles per hour.

"The vision is becoming reality. W-OFDM is living up to its potential by bringing Network Living to the world," says Dr. Hatim Zaghloul, Chairman and CEO. "Mobility is now another asset of W-OFDM. No other technology, particularly vector-based systems, has that capability."

The essence of Network Living depends upon the mobility of technology, and the implications for mobile applications are tremendous. They include such concepts as viewing web and multimedia clips from a car, home monitoring through video-surveillance, and being alerted to world news events as they happen.

"This demonstration confirms that W-OFDM technology was an excellent choice for IEEE 802.11a," says Kursat Kimyacioglu, Manager, Business Line Connectivity, Philips Semiconductors. "Bringing mobile high-speed access to any user, anytime, anywhere will be a key asset in delivering the endless communication needs of the future."
