Motorola Joins OFDM Forum as Principal Member


OFDM Forum's Addition of Seven New Members Validates Need for Worldwide OFDM Standard

The OFDM Forum, an association established to promote a single high-speed wireless communications standard, today announced Motorola Inc. as the newest principal member.

Michael Dydyk, Senior Member of Technical Staff at Motorola is enthusiastic about the part the company will play in developing a single, compatible global OFDM standard, "Motorola and the other companies involved in the OFDM Forum have an excellent opportunity to help shape the high-speed communications of the future. OFDM technology, because of its extremely efficient use of bandwidth, has potential to greatly impact the consumer products market."

The OFDM Forum's principal members which include; Alcatel, Ericsson, Infineon, Intersil, Nokia, Philips Semiconductors, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Silicon Automation Systems, SmartMove, Solectek, TCFI (Testbed Center for Interoperability at UCSB) and Wi-LAN, were also joined by the recent addition of the following members to the organization's already impressive roster:

  • Redline Communications, Inc. - principal member
  • Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd. - associate member
  • Tandberg Television - associate member
  • RF Solutions, Inc. - small business member
  • nBand Communications, Inc. - small business member
  • Ministry of Transports, Communications, Housing and Construction of Peru - government agency member
  • 4G Network Technologies - upgrade to principal member from small business member

New members will participate with existing OFDM Forum members as well as non-members interested in developing a single global standard for OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) technology at the next OFDM Forum quarterly meeting in Tampa, Florida on November 2 and 3, 2000. There, worldwide leaders in the wireless industry will address wireless communications and technology issues such as interoperability between market segments, harmonized standards and spectrum allocations, specifically related to OFDM technology.

To date, the OFDM Forum has grown to include 46 members, 15 of which are listed as Principal Members of the organization. 

About the OFDM Forum's November Meeting:
The OFDM Forum's November meeting will take place in Tampa, Florida at the Radisson Riverwalk Hotel on November 2 and 3, 2000. The meeting will combine plenary sessions and working group meetings designed to provide delegates the opportunity to share developments in OFDM technology and products. Currently, the following organizations are scheduled to present to the Forum at large:

  • Georgia Institute of Technology
  • National Semiconductor
  • Pacific Broadband Communications
  • RF Solutions Inc.
  • RunCom Technologies Ltd.
  • Silicon Automation Systems Ltd.
  • Sprint's Broadband Wireless Division

As well, Ericsson and Solectek will make presentations to the Fixed Wireless Access working group; the Georgia Institute of Technology will present to the Wireless Road Access working group; and No Wires Needed will present to the Wireless LAN, Wireless PAN and Home Multi-media working group. The presentations enable participants to share new product and technology developments, and to identify challenges that may be solved using OFDM technology. The working groups provide enable further discussion and development of recommendations to be put forth to standards bodies.
