Michael Vladescu , President & CEO

Michael Vladescu is responsible for all operations of WiLAN, including the development and implementation of the company’s strategic and operating plans. Michael brings more than 20 years of management experience related to all aspects of patent licensing, portfolio development and patent prosecution.

Prior to joining WiLAN, Michael was Vice-President, Licensing and Intellectual Property at MOSAID Technologies where he led the effort to license the company’s patent portfolio to many of the world’s best known electronics companies and drove success in their patent licensing programs. Michael also previously held the role of Patent Portfolio Account Manager with Semiconductor Insights, a leader in technical and patent analyses of integrated circuits and electronic systems.

Michael has a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Waterloo and also holds an Executive MBA from Queen’s University.

Andrew Parolin , SVP, Licensing

Andrew Parolin is responsible for the licensing of WiLAN’s portfolio of wireless, wireline, digital television and other technologies.

His previous role with WiLAN was Vice-President, Wireless Technologies, which he assumed in November 2007. During his tenure, the business unit negotiated license agreements with over 95 companies including global technology leaders ASUSTek, BlackBerry, Sharp and Samsung.

Before joining WiLAN, Andrew worked at SiGe Semiconductor, a fabless semiconductor company specializing in next-generation integrated circuit designs, where he served as Director of Wireless Data Products.

Andrew has a MBA from the University of Ottawa, a Master of Applied Science from Queen’s University, and a Bachelor of Engineering from the Technical University of Nova Scotia. Andrew is a member of the Licensing Executives Society.

Sunwoong Hwang , SVP, Licensing

Sunwoong Hwang joined WiLAN in 2018, and is responsible for the licensing of WiLAN’s semiconductor portfolios. He brings a wealth of experience to the role, having successfully been involved with numerous successful licensing programs.

Sunwoong was previously with Conversant IP, where he was Vice President, Semiconductor Licensing. Prior to joining Conversant IP, he was a Program Manager at Ottawa’s Chipworks, an IP consulting and reverse engineering firm. He began his career as a failure analysis engineer in 1989 at Hynix Semiconductor (formerly Hyundai Electronics Inc.) in Korea.

Sunwoong holds a Bachelor of Science in Materials Science and Engineering from Korea University.

Steve Adam , SVP, Business Development

Steve Adam is head of the business development team at WiLAN Inc, whose responsibilities include patent acquisitions, assessments of relevant markets, identification of new business opportunities and the establishment of partnerships with patent owners. Steve brings to the role over 25 years’ experience in management, sales, business development, licensing and strategic alliances. Steve was instrumental in bringing more than 10,000 patents into WiLAN subsidiaries and is currently tasked with implementing corporate business development strategies that align with WiLAN’s overall goals.

Before joining WiLAN, Steve worked at Pachira IP, and he spent seven years at Chipworks, a globally recognized patent-related technical services firm, most recently as vice president, patent intelligence. At Chipworks, he was responsible for the overall operation of the patent business unit, including sales, marketing, program management and engineering.

Ken Stanwood , CTO

Ken Stanwood is responsible for government affairs, university technology transfer, litigation support, and technical advisory of acquisitions and investments. Ken brings more than 30 years of experience in broadband wireless technology development including protocol and algorithm development, intellectual property, and standardization. For the past 16 years, he holds more than 100 U.S. patents in broadband wireless communications.

Prior to WiLAN, Ken served as Executive Vice President, Technology and Standards for NextWave Wireless.

Ken holds a BS in Mathematical Sciences from Oregon State University and a MS in Computer Science from Stanford University.

Derek de Laat , VP, IP Investments & Valuation

Derek de Laat is an IP Finance and Licensing professional with a focus on alternative asset valuation, damages, acquisitions & divestitures, IP Financing, and licensing strategy. Prior to WiLAN, Derek held similar roles at BlackBerry, and RockStar Consortium.

Mr. de Laat holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Erasmus University, an MBA (Finance) from Carleton University, a diploma in Operational Research from the Canadian Operational Research Society (CORS), a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation, and a Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation. Derek teaches Business Decision Modeling and Valuation part-time at Carleton University.

Laura Bradshaw , VP Legal

Laura Bradshaw is an experienced corporate and transactional attorney specializing in intellectual property and technology licensing and acquisitions, regulatory law, litigation and corporate commercial law. Prior to WiLAN, Laura had similar in-house roles at BlackBerry, and Tundra Semiconductor.

Laura first worked as a litigation and transactional lawyer for Stikemann Elliott LLP focusing on intellectual property and technology areas.

Laura has an Honours BA from McGill University, and a Law degree from Queen’s University. Laura is a member in good standing of the Law Society of Upper Canada.

Stephen Thompson , SVP, Finance

Stephen Thompson currently serves WiLAN as Senior Vice President, Finance. Mr. Thompson joined WiLAN in September of 2016 as Vice-President, Finance and has held the role of Interim CFO for Quarterhill and WiLAN during his tenure. For 25 years, Mr. Thompson has held senior financial management and leadership roles in the technology, mining, and utility industries. Prior roles in public companies have included the role of Chief Financial Officer at Northern Graphite Corporation (TSX), Vice President, Finance at Espial Group Inc. (TSX), and Vice President Controller and Corporate Audit at Accelio Corporation (formerly JetForm Corporation) (NASDAQ, TSX). Mr. Thompson was the Vice President, Finance of Hydro Ottawa Limited and started his career with Ernst & Young.

Mr. Thompson holds a Bachelor of Commerce (honours) degree from Queens' University (1991) and is a Chartered Professional Accountant, Chartered Accountant (Ontario) as well as a Certified Public Accountant (Illinois, USA).

Mike McCartney , VP, Program Development

Mike McCartney is an experienced patent agent and licensing executive. Prior to joining WiLAN in 2006, Mike was a Manager of Patent Services at Semiconductor Insights (now Tech Insights) where he managed the Patent Development Services line of the business, as well as oversaw the development of IP Landscape products. Over the last 13 years at WiLAN, Mike has held a variety of roles in the company, including licensing, acquisitions and patent prosecution. In his current role, Mike oversees the management of WiLAN’s patent portfolio.

Mike holds a B.Eng in electrical engineering from Carleton University and has written numerous articles on patents and their affect on the development of technology.
