Licensing Partnerships

In a licensing partnership, WiLAN assumes responsibility for licensing patented inventions developed/owned by companies or individual inventors.  These partnerships create a win-win-win situation for our partners, our licensees and WiLAN.

  • For inventors and companies, participating in a licensing partnership positions them to generate income from their patented inventions.
  • These programs make it easier for current and future licensees to gain access to technologies that help improve or enable their products.
  • WiLAN gains access to technologies that complement or diversify our licensing programs.

A few common questions about our licensing partnership programs are addressed below.

Q. Why partner with WiLAN?

A. WiLAN’s team of experienced business, technical and legal professionals, using our specialized licensing methodology and strong financial position, has proven its ability to license patented inventions.  A few proof points are:

  • WiLAN has licensed its intellectual property to over 230 companies; and
  • WiLAN’s patented inventions have been licensed by many of the world’s largest manufacturers of communication and consumer electronics products including:

Trademarks are property of their respective owners.

Q. Does participating in a licensing partnership program require additional investment by an inventor/company?

    A.  Participating inventors and companies are typically not required to make any financial investment.  Investment in the form of knowledge transfer may be required to assist WiLAN in preparing licensing program support documentation.

    Q. Does participating in a licensing partnership guarantee that an inventor/ company will receive income from the licensing of their patents?

    A. A licensing partnership program led by WiLAN will develop the documentation and execute the tactics that are believed to be necessary to license an inventor/company’s patented invention(s). Some risks could prevent the program from generating the revenue necessary to provide an income to a participating inventor or company.

If you have patent assets that you believe can be better utilized to generate an income, please contact us to explore whether a licensing partnership with WiLAN is right for you.

The process we use to evaluate potential licensing partnerships begins with patent owners completing a Portfolio Intake Form.  The information that you provide will serve to educate our team on the patents and the potential for licensing them.
